Learn About My Approach to:
As a personal trainer working on cruise ships and many health and fitness clubs throughout the UK, I began getting frustrated with the “cookie cutter” approach I was taught as a personal trainer. I started to develop more of an interest in helping people with injuries and back pain however I wanted to learn more how to correct these issues with the personal trainer skills I had. I had hands on skills from studying sports massage and injury rehabilitation and then I came across the work of Paul Chek. I went on to study many courses of his and now practice in a more holistic manner with health and exercise. You can learn more about What is a CHEK Practitioner?

If you have an injury I can provide you with strength training and teach you how to exercise correctly with respect to your clinical issue while advancing you into end stage/sports specific training in minimal time.
If you do not have an injury, I will teach you the most effective, tried and proven methods in strength and conditioning to get maximal results in minimal time.
Whilst working in the fitness industry as a personal trainer I have along the years developed many skills and knowledge in fitness and utilise many philosophies from Strength and Conditioning, Pilates, Physiotherapy, Sports Medicine, Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Functional Exercise, Weight Management, GP Exercise Referral, Olymipic Weight lifting, Golf Conditioning, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, CHEK and more. Although massage is generally thought of as a complementary therapy, it is now being acknowledged by health care professionals as a genuine method in helping people with back pain and many sports injury syndromes. It may be very helpful in the management of chronic back pain, but also assist you in the acute stages of injury.
Now, I am not talking about your usual gentle relaxing holistic massage. Infact, the soft tissue techniques I use is anything but. It is very medical and clinically orienented and so my aim is to help you and your back pain or sports injury, meaning sometimes the sports massage techniques are a little uncomfortable, however benefitial to get to the source of the pain and heal the effected area quickly and successfully. Most clients feel their symptoms and stiffness are reduced by over 50% in their first session and then continued success thereafter.

- Headaches and Migraines
From an exercise perspective, which is where my expertise has grown from, there are commonly two areas that create sports injury in the body. These are muscle imbalance and instability of joints and as a result can cause pain.
Muscle imbalance is commonly caused by our every day habits and postures, pain syndromes and surprisingly, even emotions. Muscle imbalance can be caused by tight back and hip muscles overpowering the lower abdominal and hamstring muscles, for example. This creates a lot of strain on the joints of the lower back as well as negatively affecting the posture of the upper body as a secondary effect. My consultation and assessment process allows me to identify which muscles in your body are out of balance so I can create a corrective exercise programme to realign your body. This may also include stretches, sports massage and referral to other practitioners if needed.
The better balanced your body is, the better it can handle the pressure of gravity as well as the everyday tasks you perform.
Spinal and postural stability is also vitally important to your recovery and by testing certain important muscles I can identify if these are doing their job correctly. They should act as a form of flexible scaffolding to support the joints of the body. By improving the way these muscles work your recovery from injury and back pain will also significantly reduce the risk of recurrence.
Once I have identified exactly which muscles need to be stretched and strengthened I will create a comprehensive programme, along with sports massage and Neuromuscular therapy to address all of the issues identified in your individual case.
Back pain is the most common symptom among my new clients and the good news is, sports massage and trigger point therapy can help massively in both the acute and chronic stages of injury!
Back pain may have many causes, such as a strained back muscle, disc problems, arthritis, or sacroiliac joint dysfunction. More than 8 out of 10 people will suffer with a bout of low back pain in their lives and 40-60% will have a reoccurrence within one year! Back pain will fall into one of two categories: acute (which indicates a recent occurrence) or chronic (the pain has been with you for an extended period of time).
As a CHEK trained Personal Trainer and Sports Massage therapist I offer a holistic approach to back care and rehabilitation and after a thorough consultation and assessment I may suggest in the initial stages to have regular sports massage, trigger point Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) massage to release the tight muscles that may be creating dysfunction and pain. After providing soft tissue therapy I use corrective exercise to strengthen your weaker muscles to restore muscle balance and improve your general movement. Your posture, fitness and muscle strength is an important element in the rehab process. As an added benefit, I also integrate health and nutrition coaching to improve your energy levels and speed up the healing process.
Back pain treatment is all about lifestyle change rather than just visiting a massage therapist or trainer when you are in severe pain. Whether you’re an active sports man or woman and you want to stay free from injury or whether you spend all day at the office and need to relieve the stress of daily life – I can help you recover and stay injury free!
Health and Nutrition Coaching is based upon holistic and naturopathic techniques, backed by science, that have helped many clients increase vitality, decrease stress and sculpt the body of their dreams. As a personal trainer and sports massage therapist I also look in detail at the underlying causes of dis-ease and stress, considering the body as a “system of systems.” By using a personal coaching model, you will learn how back pain and sports injury are preventable through healthy eating habits, lifestyle management and appropriate types of exercise.
My clients with back pain and sports injury understand why every meal, every bout of exercise and every late night has a hormonal consequence on the body.
No matter what your belief system is, you’ll likely agree that just because someone is not sick, this does not mean they are healthy! Most chronic back pain, health conditions and diseases take years to develop, but a healthy lifestyle can go a long way toward prevention. The information taught in my health and performance programs does not include “quick fixes”- which never work long term- but instead I use proven principles which build a strong foundation for health, fitness and an injury free life.
