Why choose me as your trainer?
Welcome to my website, Tom Smith Health.com, you are probably wondering what makes me different to all the other personal training companies and trainer's out there on the internet already?
A key component of my approach is the integration of many different modalities; mind-body fitness, traditional exercise prescription, soft-tissue massage therapies, alternative healthcare, orthopedic rehabiliation and nutrition lifestyle coaching.
Currently I am studying a Masters of Osteopathy and Naturopathy degree at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine after working in the health and fitness industary for the last 10 years.
I am registered with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) level 4, CHEK Exercise Coach, Personal Trainer, Obesity and Diabetes Trainer, GP Exercise Referral Specialist and Holistic Lifestyle Coach through the CHEK institute. In addition to these qualifications in personal training I have had many years of experience in teaching group fitness, presenting seminars and been a sports massage therapist at leading events such as the London Marathon and working in a Chiropractic Clinic as a Corrective Exercise Specialist.

Burn Fat, Get Fit And Be Stronger With Your Own Trainer!
1Exercise is like a medication prescription drug, if you take the wrong drug or dosage, you will get the wrong result! Many personal training and health and fitness programs seen today are often straight out of a magazine or the internet and are never catered for the person as a whole. The type of exercise and the duration is very person specific and dependant on their needs, which is my goal for you as a trainer.
Previously when working as a personal trainer on cruise ships and health and fitness clubs throughout the UK, I began to get frustrated with the "cookie cutter" model/approach I was taught as a personal trainer, a "this for that" approach some might say. I started to realise the more I learnt about personal training, health, fitness and the body that we are a cybernetic system of systems, all interconnected. Cybernetics is the interdisciplinary study of the structure of regulatory systems and so my approach to personal training is to understand how your physical body is interconnected to your biochemistry and mental/emotional status and design a training program catered for your needs with these systems taken into consideration.A key component of my approach is the integration of many different modalities; mind-body fitness, traditional exercise prescription, soft-tissue massage therapies, alternative healthcare, orthopedic rehabiliation and personal nutrition and lifestyle coaching.

Relieve Everyday Aches & Pains with Stress Busting Sports Massage
2Sports Massage is a fantastic way to release tight muscles, improve recovery, assist in lymphatic drainage, deliver nutrition to the cell and eliminate hyper irritable spots in muscle called trigger points. I have been trainer and qualified as a sports massage therapist in Watford and North London for the last 10 years and find it very effective. Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) on the other hand is a structurally integrative approach to helping people with back pain, neck pain and sports injury using massage, muscle energy and trigger point release techniques.
I use these techniques in the intial stages to assist quickly in releasing tight muscles to improve posture before or during the intervention of corrective exercise and personal trainer programs.
The problem sometimes with manual therapy such as sports and remedial massage is that the patient/client can often become dependant on the therapist or trainer applying "treatment" for their complaint and so they never really allow themselves to become empowered or in-dependant in helping themselves. Health is a journey and often the pains, diseases and syndromes is a warning light indicating the body is not in homeostasis or in balance on a physical, biochemical (nutrition/hormones etc), mental and emotional level. -
Re-Train Your Body To Move Without Pain
3From an exercise perspective, which is where my expertise as a trainer has grown from, there are commonly two areas that create sports injury in the body. These are muscle imbalances and instability of joints and as a result can cause pain. Muscle imbalance is commonly caused by our every day habits and postures, pain syndromes and surprisingly, even emotions.
As an example muscle imbalance can be caused by a tight back and hip muscles which will over power the lower abdominals and hamstring muscles, disrupting the stability of your trunk on your legs and upper body. This creates a lot of strain on joints in the lower back as well as negatively affecting the posture of the upper body as a secondary effect. My personal trainer consultation and assessment process (in and around Watford and North London) will allow me to identify which muscles in your body are out of balance. Once completed I can create a personal corrective exercise programme to realign your body. This may also include stretches, sports massage and neuromuscular therapy if needed as apart of my personal training services. The better balanced your body is as a whole, the better it can handle the pressure of gravity as well as the everyday tasks you perform.

Beat Back Pain Naturally with my Personal Back Training Program!
4Consulting a personal trainer for back pain may not be the norm in today's society and often a eye raiser in the medical community as many perceive a personal trainer to have little or no knowledge in the area of back pain and/or the rehabilitation protocols to successfully train people with back pain, something a Physiotherapist or Osteopath should do some might say… A personal trainer operating within or outside the rehabilitation field will frequently encounter clients with back pain or a spinal pathology.
A survey of personal trainer's conducted by EFI Total Gym of San Diego, found that 100% of personal trainer s surveyed were working with clients experiencing chronic pain. As you can see, it is very important for a trainer to have a very good knowledge in 1, understanding about the related anatomy of the body, 2, pathology, 3, know and understand personal training design considerations for someone with a back issue and 4, at least to know what to look for and refer out if needed to an allied health care practitioner or GP. However, many do not and as a Masters of Osteopathy student and a CHEK trained personal trainer I can help you get fit, healthy and help you with your back pain related complaints, naturally without medical drugs and the long wait for NHS services. -
Transform Your Health and Lose Weight Naturally with my Personal Nutrition and Lifestyle Plan!
5My approach to nutrition is a natural way to become healthy again. Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching is a client-centered approach to health and fitness training rather than symptom or dis-ease-centered. Instead of addressing health problems as an isolated entity, I address individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances and dysfunctions.
With the anaolgy of an iceberg in mind, a named health condition, weight gain or disease such as diabetes, hypertension, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but actually, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Almost always, the cause of the problem and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction and/or an imbalance of your bodily systems.
Named health conditions are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface are the real causes of a client’s health and performance challenges. By using a personal trainer coaching model, I teach my clients how weight loss challenges, back pain and sports injury are preventable through healthy eating habits, lifestyle management and appropriate types of exercise. My clients also understand why every meal, every bout of exercise and every late night has a hormonal consequence on the body.
