What is a Nutritionist?

A nutritionist will discuss any nutritional worries or problems that affect your health and lifestyle. With regards to sports injury or people undergoing therapy and rehabilitation programs are particularly concerned with diet and nutrition due to the effect it can have on healing and recovery. Tom Smith will assess your current nutrition and lifestyle patterns and check for any diet imbalances or deficiencies and advise you on how to improve them. If you have current health problems such as Obesity, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure Tom can make recommendations to modify what you are currently doing.

What happens at the first visit?

A nutritionist may ask you about your objectives and whether you want to lose weight, tone up or simply improve your current health status. The diet and nutrition coach will also discuss your lifestyle, eating patterns and any allergies or intolerances you may have. A nutritionist may also ask you about any digestive problems and to in future keep a food diary so they can keep a record of your diet and nutrition plan.

As a bonus, to save time and to gather as much nutrition information as possible, I send you a unique health appraisal and health, exercise, diet and lifestyle diary worksheet to complete prior to a consultation. This also assesses many aspects of your health and medical history and whether Tom Smith is the right practitioner for you at this moment in time. Also recommendations on functional diagnostic lab tests and other health care practitioners may need to get involved to help you with your goals.

What are functional diagnostic lab tests?

The method of using lab tests is from Functional Medicine.

What is Functional Medicine?

It’s a science-based, natural way to become healthy again. Functional Medicine is client-centered approach to health and performance rather than symptom or dis-ease-centered. Instead of addressing health problems as an isolated entity, it addresses individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances and dysfunctions.

With the anaolgy of an iceberg in mind, a named health condition or disease such as diabetes, hypertension, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but actually, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Almost always, the cause of the problem and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction and/or an imbalance of your bodily systems.

Named health conditions are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface are the real causes of a client’s health and performance challenges.

If the nutritionist only addresses the symptoms at the tip of the iceberg, it rarely leads to long-term success. Identifying and addressing the underlying root cause or causes has a much better chance to successfully resolve a client’s health challenge.

Using scientific principles, advanced diagnostic lab testing and treatments other than drugs or surgery, Functional Medicine restores balance in the body’s primary physiological processes.

Testing can be performed at home and sent to a secure and reputable functional lab testing company, no tests are performed in person with Tom Smith.

What does a food diary and unique health assessment consist of?

A diet and nutrition diary is one of the best ways to find out about your food patterns, timings and food ratios. When keeping a diary it is important to be true to yourself and how you would really eat as it will help your practitioner advise you in person. This includes fluid intake, snacks, treats and rituals. Alongside keeping a food diary, you will be asked to keep a record of your physical activity levels, sleep and energy levels which all are interlinked. My unique health assessment assesses key glandular organs and subjectively how they are functioning. This allows me to take a snap shot of what is going on inside you and later investigate further if need be.

Will the nutritionist give me a diet plan?

In fact no, due to law only registered dieticians can prescribe a food plan. However, on advice and recommendation, healthier diet and nutrition options, supplements and further lab testing are made and you decide whether you want to go further, research into and or decline.

However, by using Metabolic Typing I use a fantastic system that analyses your metabolic type and nutrition type with simple questionnaires which help us together identify what diet plan would suit you best. This is a starting point and as you get healthier further coaching is needed to fine tune and modify your diet. There are 3 types, Carbohydrate, Mixed and Protein types, by reading this you may already think to yourself “I am this or I am that” however, each person’s body burns through fuel or oxides food at different rates and so what may be suitable for one person may not be suitable for another.

Only by testing and fine tuning with curtain ratios of food you can be more sure.

What experience do you have?

I have been studying, presenting and coaching diet and nutrition for the best part of 10 years! I have recently completed delivering a successful nutrition and lifestyle program in partnership with Hertsmere Leisure and the NHS Hertfordshire PTC tackling the Obesity and Diabetes epidemic one person at a time. In fact, over 73% of participants showed improvements by losing weight and continued to participate in regular physical activity. We also allowed many other people to attend who had back pain, heartburn, digestive problems and who generally wanted and needed to increase their physical activity.

Alongside coaching one and one, I have also delivered workshops to corporate wellbeing days and series on health, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle intervention. Clients include, Hertsmere Leisure, Pizza Hut HQ, BPL, West Herts NHS and Camelot.

What will I learn?

Clients on the Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching program understand why every meal, every bout of exercise and every late night has a hormonal consequence on the body.

No matter what your belief system is, you’ll likely agree that just because someone is not sick, this does not mean they are healthy! Most chronic diseases take years to develop, but a healthy lifestyle can go a long way toward prevention. The information presented in the Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching Program does not include “quick fixes”- which never work long term-but instead we use proven principles which build a strong foundation of health.
