If you are particularly concerned about improving your health and performance, a personal trainer can devise a program with your goals in mind. More and more people are seeking a trainer with specialist skills when they embark on a health and fitness program.

A personal trainer uses their expert knowledge of health and fitness to devise and conduct exercise programs to the individuals special needs or ability.

Why Should I Use A Personal Trainer?

Personal Trainers are perfect for people who need and prefer individual attention. Through my health and performance services packages I can not only design a training program for you but also coach you on how to eat, move and be healthy from the inside out.

Having a personal trainer means that you can train in your own home where it is most convenient for the client without gym joining fees and waiting to get on the exercise equipment. In addition to giving you advice to exercise, suitable advice will be given on how to manage your training sessions around your lifestyle, reducing stress and also a suitable diet for the client based on your metabolic type.

What Qualifications does a Personal Trainer have?

Trainers need to have a Personal Training qualification in order to train people. Many trainers’ go on to gain additional qualifications and tend to specialise in a certain area of health and fitness, for example weight loss and cardiovascular conditioning. It is important the trainer has Personal Liability Insurance and hold an up to date certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or First Aid.

Tom Smith is registered with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) Level 4 and is a Qualified CHEK Exercise Coach to add to his many qualifications as a Personal Trainer.

Tom Smith specialises in exercise for back pain and injury rehabilitation, he can train you from your injury stage and progress you to high performance conditioning with exercises with gym ball’s and weights as you recover and get healthier and fitter.

The main focus of Tom Smith’s sessions are to improve the interaction of your back and abdominal muscles (also known as your core or inner unit) this also corrects muscle imbalances that normally trigger back pain and sports injuries. This style of training is called Corrective Exercise where he has developed the skills and knowledge from the CHEK Institute and from working alongside Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Watford FC Physiotherapists.

Tom Smith also holds the following additional Qualifications:

What happens during the first consultation?

When consulting with Tom Smith it is important for him to understand your goals, readiness for change and whether he is the right personal trainer for you at this moment in time. This screening process is initiated with a Pre-Consultation Health Questionnaire that covers your health/medical history, including the analysis of your diet, lifestyle and goals. This Pre-Consultation Health Screening also saves time during the Physical Assessment/Consultation and allows Tom to get to understand your health and fitness challenges before you meet.

During the physical Assessment/Consultation that normally lasts 2 hours consists of a posture assessment, flexibility range of movement testing, abdominal and core function testing and anything else that your personal trainer needs to assess. It is not uncommon for Tom Smith to assess your breathing function, vision, jaw and nerve reflexes that can help him design an exercise program to prevent any injuries later on.

This meeting also allows you and the personal trainer to decide how you will progress, commence and whether you need to consult with another health care practitioner alongside your training program to get fit and healthy from the inside out.

Will I need to take any tests?

Testing is always important to gain some measureable outcomes of your personal trainer sessions. I offer a client centred approach rather than symptom or disease centred and uses Functional Medicine to uncover the underlying causes to health, fitness and rehabilitation.

So what is Functional Medicine?

  1. Functional medicine focuses on preventative health care; this means listening to the many signals your body is giving you.
  2. Functional medicine utilises leading DNA lab testing to assess how well the body’s 4 major systems; hormonal, digestive, detoxification and immune systems are working.
  3. Functional medicine uncovers the root cause of your symptoms which almost always stems from an imbalance in one or more of the major body systems.

This is additional to the Personal Training services and all tests will be made payable to the lab companies.

As during your physical assessment, Tom Smith measures your posture, flexibility, core strength and co-ordination and testing of your vision, breathing patterns to more medical testing such as your nerve reflexes to understand your body more in detail.

Fee’s can vary due to the nature of having a trainer travel to your home and offer you one to one advice on your health and fitness. Many value this attention and see it as money well spent rather than wasting their time going alone. At Tom Smith Health and Performance, attention to detail is key and most packages guarantee a stretching, exercise and nutrition plan that is tailored for the individual depending on their goals. For people with back pain or a related injury, time with Tom may be spent receiving Massage and Manual Therapy before corrective and high performance exercise can commence. For prices please contact Tom Smith for more details.

How often do I need to see a Personal Trainer?

To achieve your goals and maintain your motivation, you will need to have regular contact with your trainer. In your first consultation you will be guided on how many sessions you will need for the goals you want to attain. Many times, your personal corrective exercise and fitness program will need to be completed on times your personal trainer is not there to assist you, just like homework. Many decide to take up regular training sessions from two to three times per week, with some who consult with Tom Smith for a program and are then taught the exercises. Clients then then go away and complete their sessions on their own. Normally, the program is updated between 4-6 weeks, progressing onto a new phase of conditioning.

How many weeks do I need to commit myself initially?

Most clients who see a personal trainer will to commit to ten sessions to start off with, however this is not a condition. This could last between three to ten weeks, depending on how often you see your trainer. It is important to make a commitment for yourself to see results. After this, you may be in a position to continue with another ten sessions after a reassessment whereby a new phase of training may commence.

How soon will I see results?

Most beginners on a health and fitness program see results within 6 weeks, more notably strength and endurance. When combined with nutrition and dedicated hard work outside your training sessions, a change in appearance may be noted. If however your sessions are sporadic, there is a greater chance you will lose sight of the goal you have set for yourself equalling a lack of motivation to kick start your personal training sessions. It is best advised to start seeing a trainer when you know going forward you are in a steady routine, professionally and personally.
